Plus Size Models Make Modest Gains

Plus fashion and plus size models have been front and center in the news lately.  Or… kinda plus size models, that is.  It used to be that size 12 was the lower limit for Plus modeling.  But lately, that number seems to be going down and size 8 is often considered plus now.  Is this a case of the fashion industry trying to get it’s plus models as skinny as possible?  Or is it a concession from the Plus side to meet runway-standard clients somewhere in the middle?

The trend towards using more “real” bodies in advertising is a very welcome one for those models who don’t fall anywhere near the size zero category.  But it does seem like one step backwards for every two steps forward and media still loves to make a spectacle out of anyone over size 4 appearing in swimwear or lingerie.

Our industry has not yet truly embraced plus models for the sake of being models.  They are still labeled as PLUS models, just to make sure the bias shows in words as equally as it does in images.  Model agency websites usually separate the plus size talent from the rest, and banish them to their own niche pages… if they even have a plus division at all.  I think that speaks volumes about where plus size models stand in 2014.

MYLA DALBESIO

Calvin Klein launched the new “Perfectly Fit” campaign, which includes size 10 model Myla Dalbesio.  Myla was interviewed by Elle Magazine last week, with the focus aimed squarely at the fact that she has the largest dress size CK has ever featured.  There’s no mention of her career history other than past battles with weight loss and the plus size label.  Nor is there any discussion of the product she’s promoting.  Fashion industry being sensationalist and promoting the model over the clothes?  Go figure!  But one thing’s for sure: she appears to be massively sucking her gut in on our cover mage above. Oh fashion, thou art fickle…
