There are so many aspects to the Fall season to look forward to: the colors of the leaves changing, pumpkin flavored treats, cozy sweaters, hayrides… the list goes on and on.  On the other hand, the chilly weather of Fall brings on dry skin and hair, the shivers, and most of all: chapped lips.

No matter where you live, whether here in the chilly Midwest or in the heat and humidity of Miami, we all can experience the discomfort of dry and chapped lips.  Even if you don’t get them, smooth lips are always desired.  And for all the BeautyLookers out there: the smoother your lips are, the easier it is to apply lip sticks, glosses and whatever else we slap on those lips!

You’re probably thinking “won’t just chap stick or lip balm do the trick?”  Yes… but no… well, kind-of.  Chap sticks and lip balms coat the skin on the lips, and can soothe redness and irritation.  But they’re really designed to protect lips and prevent issues from happening, not fix problems after something’s gone wrong.  To get rid of the dryness, flakes and occasional burning, you’ll need to use an exfoliating lip scrub instead.

Using a lip scrub is simple as 1-2-3:

1:  Wet your lips
2:  Put some scrub on your finger and gently rub it onto your lips, using circular motions, for a minute or two.
3:  Rinse it off with warm water.

Is this necessary to scrub your lips every day?  No!  Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.  If your lips are really dry and flaking, scrub as needed.  Otherwise, once a week will do the trick to prevent dryness and keep lips smooth.  Be sure to apply a lip balm or calming Chap Stick afterwards.  It’s all about preventive maintenance.

Where can we find these little lip savers?  More and more cosmetic companies are coming out with their own versions of lip scrubs at a range of prices.  E.l.f. Cosmetics has the least-expensive one on the market right now,  for about three dollars, while Sugar Cosmetics carries a lip “treatment” for around twenty-two dollars.   The nice thing is that if you’re the D.I.Y. type, you can find recipes and make a lip scrub yourself, using ingredients you probably already have at home.

BeautyLook was nice enough to provide our readers with some of the easiest lip scrub recipes we’ve found and tried.  So go ahead, take a look, and get your scrub on!

For the Fall Season lovers

  • 1 tbsp organic extra virgin olive oil
    1 tbsp organic honey
  • 1 ½ tbsp organic sugar
    1 tsp pumpkin spice

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl and stir well. You should get a smooth and grainy texture
  • Transfer the mixture into a small container. The edible scrub will last two weeks if kept refrigerated.

For the Christmas-Scent Smellers

  • 1 tablespoon organic raw coconut oil
  • 3 teaspoons organic coarse sugar
  • 1 teaspoon honey (if vegan, agave would work well here as well)
  • 5 drops essential oil in Peppermint

How to:

  • Combine all ingredients (you may need to melt the coconut oil on the stove top or in the microwave) and place in a storage container of your choosing. (this one is a perfect stocking stuffer!)

For those who want fuller lips

  • Olive Oil
  • Salt or Sugar (salt will give a thicker texture)
  • Cinnamon

How to:

  • Mix 1 tsp of ground cinnamon with 1 Tbsp of olive oil, then
Add 1 Tbsp of salt (or sugar) in small bowl.
  • Stir mixture well.
  • After desired texture is accomplished, store in favorite little containter.
  • For maximum plumping affect, leave on lips for 5 to 10 mins, then rinse off.

Most comparable to store bought

  • One part honey
  • One part coconut oil
  • One part brown sugar

How to:

  • Mix all ingredients together and put into containers (can get them from the dollar tree).
  • Store in the refrigerator.
