How Long Does Makeup Last?

MakeupWe know you just hate to throw away those nice (and pricey!) makeup products after you’ve invested your your hard-earned cash.   But swollen eyes or skin infections are no laughing matter.  If bacteria can thrive in freezing waters or volcanic vents, you better bet they’re setting up a home on your lipstick and eyeliners as well.  With enough time, your old makeup can hurt you. All cosmetics have a useful shelf life that varies by product type.  We’ve put together this quick and handy list to remind you when it’s time to say out with the old, and in with the new.  And remember:  when in doubt, toss it out.

MASCARA:  2-3 MONTHS.  Experts all agree that mascara has the shortest lifespan of cosmetics, and runs the highest risk of bacterial infections.  Replace your mascara frequently.

LIQUID EYE LINER: 3-6 MONTHS

CREAM-BASED PRODUCTS: 6-12 MONTHS

CONCEALER:  1 year

NAIL POLISH:  1 year

FOUNDATION (WATER-BASED):  12 months

FOUNDATION (OIL-BASED): 18 months

POWDERS:  2 years

LIPSTICKS: 2 years

EYE SHADOW:  2 years

PENCIL EYE-LINER:  2 years, sharpen regularly

PENCIL LIP LINER: 2 years, sharpen regularly
